Gilas fails, Tony Parker explodes
NBA star Tony Parker scored 21 points to lead France in a 93-84 win over Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA-Olympic Qualifying on Tuesday in Manila.
Parker played the major role in attacking the basket in the third quarter as France created a distance against the host team. Parker’s speed and height was not match at all to the smaller guards of Gilas.
Though France are ranked No. 5 in the world, the game was a close one. Gilas Pilipinas even controlled the lead almost all the first half except for the last two minutes when France took over.
Andray Blatche countered with his 21 points but in a losing cause. Terrence Romeo made himself known in the basketball world by his penetrations and outside shoots. Romeo scored 19 points and 3-for-5 from outside the three-point line. Jayson Castro added 14 points for Gilas.
Parker praised the Philippine team for their extraordinary effort.
“First of all, I wanna congratulate the Philippines. They had a great game. They were on fire in the first half. They played with a lot of energy and you have to give a lot of credit to them,” Parker said after the game.
“You can’t be prouder about the team. They played a great game. They made it tough on us. We had to dig deep to try and get the [win].”
Gilas will play New Zealand on Wednesday night.
